Marina Abramović Retrospective at Royal Academy Examines the Audience
The Royal Academy in London hosts the first retrospective of a woman artist in its main galleries, focusing on Marina Abramović's career and her relationship with audiences. The exhibition opens with 74 videos from her 2010 MoMA performance 'The Artist Is Present,' showing public participants including celebrities like Jemima Kirke, Colm Tóibín, Lou Reed, Björk, and James Franco. It includes a re-creation of 'Rhythm 0' (1972) with objects like a gun and axe, and 'Imponderabilia' (1977) where visitors pass between two naked performers. The show features re-performances of 'Nude with Skeleton' (2005) and 'The House with the Ocean View' (2002), as well as crystal sculptures and 'Luminosity' (1997/2023). Abramović has planned her own funeral with three graves in different countries.
