Marilyn Minter Curates The Virgins Show at Family Business

exhibition · 2026-04-23

In Chelsea, the anti-gallery Family Business—founded by Maurizio Cattelan and Massimiliano Gioni—opened with The Virgins Show, curated by Marilyn Minter. The 11-square-meter space, which sells nothing, changes its installation every two weeks. Minter selected paintings by first-time exhibitors John Szlasa and Austin Lee, juxtaposed with early videos by Laurel Nakadake, Mika Rottenberg, and Patti Chang, whose works blur performed fiction and fractured reality. Rebecca Ward's adhesive tape installation unifies the show, snaking across walls without adhering anything, guiding visitors' eyes from piece to piece. The tape, like the gallery itself, is discreet and stripped of its usual function, blending into Chelsea's commercial landscape while subtly transforming it. The show runs from February 16 to April 16, 2012.
