Marigpa's Metallic Canvases Travel from Hong Kong to Edinburgh in 2025-2026 Exhibitions

exhibition · 2026-04-20

London-based artist Marigpa creates mixed-media oil paintings featuring metallic gold, silver, and copper pigments that connect earthly materials with cosmic themes. Their work will be exhibited at Hong Kong Arts Centre from April 8-14, 2025, followed by a show at Dundas Street Gallery in Edinburgh opening February 27, 2026. In an interview with ArtReview, Marigpa explained their artistic process begins with personal experiences, often triggered by travel to unconventional destinations, which they translate into visual language through layered oils and mixed media. Rather than citing individual artistic influences, Marigpa draws inspiration from broad cultural periods including ancient Egyptian cave paintings, Persian miniature paintings, Mina'i ware ceramics, Mayan Totems, Byzantine icon painting, Thangkha paintings, Native American Totems, Renaissance humanism, and the CoBrA movement. Their metallic hues create ethereal atmospheres intended to foster spiritual contemplation and emotional resonance. Marigpa views abstraction as a distillation of essence rather than rejection of representation, using form, color, and texture to express underlying truths. The artist's materials establish a tangible connection to the earth while also reflecting celestial light and energy from the universe. Marigpa is planning another exhibition in Edinburgh early next year and continues to experiment with texture and light in their metallic surfaces.
