Mariette Pathy Allen's Transformations at ClampArt
Mariette Pathy Allen's exhibition 'Transformations' is on view at ClampArt in New York until April 10. The artist has photographed the transgender community for over forty years, pioneering gender consciousness through her work. Her first book, 'Transformations: Crossdressers and those Who Love Them' (E.P. Dutton, Inc, 1989), was revolutionary. The series began with black-and-white images at Mardi Gras in New Orleans in 1978, after she stayed in the same hotel as a group of crossdressers. The exhibition includes the complete portfolio of vintage color prints from the 1980s, previously shown at Simon Lowinsky Gallery in January 1990, plus black-and-white prints. Her second book, 'The Gender Frontier' (Kehrer Verlag, 2003), won the Lambda Literary Award 2004 in the transgender/genderqueer category. Other books include 'TransCuba' (Daylight Books, 2014) and 'Transcendents: Spirit Mediums in Burma and Thailand' (Daylight Books, 2017).
