Marie-Antoinette's Fashion Legacy: Christian Lacroix Costumes at Château de Fontainebleau
The Château de Fontainebleau presents an exhibition titled 'Marie-Antoinette : de l’avant-garde à l’avant-scène', showcasing eleven stage costumes designed by Christian Lacroix for the 2019 Opéra-Comique production of Adolphe Adam's 'Le Postillon de Longjumeau', directed by Michel Fau. These flamboyant pieces, crafted in the Opéra-Comique's workshops and worn by mannequins from the Centre national du costume de scène, evoke the entire 18th century. They are displayed throughout the historic rooms of the royal residence, where the period decor dialogues with the costumes. The exhibition highlights Marie-Antoinette's enduring influence on fashion, from her time as a style icon to her portrayal on stage. Christian Lacroix, who closed his fashion house in 2009 to focus on stage costumes, took on the commission two centuries after Rose Bertin dressed the queen. The exhibition runs until November 2, 2026, open daily except Tuesdays, from 9:30 am to 6 pm (5 pm in October), with admission at €17 (reduced €15, free under 26).
