Mariateresa Sartori's Sonic Seascapes at Doppelgaenger Bari

exhibition · 2026-05-04

The Doppelgaenger gallery in Bari continues its homage to the late Chiara Fumai with a series of exhibitions based on her unrealized project "Il tesoro della città delle donne." The second installment features Venetian artist Mariateresa Sartori (b. 1961), who is concurrently showing a dual solo exhibition with Roman Opalka at the Fondazione Querini Stampalia in Venice. Sartori's show, titled "Il tempo del suono. Onde," transforms the gallery's back wall with over five hundred charcoal drawings on paper that record the motion and sound of waves. The artist describes herself as a "sismografo" (seismograph), capturing the perfect synchrony between hand and sound—its duration, volume, force, rhythm, and fluctuations. The exhibition also includes pinhole photography works that collapse distance between viewer and subject, turning historical artworks into familiar companions. A particularly moving piece, "Preghiera a sua madre perché muoia," features a poem by Mariangela Gualtieri recited by a foreign woman with an uncertain voice, disorienting yet profound. Chiara Bertola's accompanying text elaborates on Sartori's practice of sitting on a small chair at Lido beach, listening to the sea and notating wave variations on staff paper.
