Mariana Silva's Conceptual Practice Examines Neoliberal Systems Through Video and Exhibition History

artist · 2026-04-20

Mariana Silva, a Portuguese artist, delves into neoliberal frameworks and institutional models through her conceptual installations and video works. Her double-channel projection, Explore, Experience, Enjoy (2013–14), reinterprets Kynaston McShine's 1970 MoMA exhibition titled Information. Silva's exploration of collective and individual dynamics was showcased at the 2016 Gwangju Biennale and Moscow Biennale. She is currently working on Friends of Interpretable Objects (2013–), inspired by Miguel Tamen's writings on natural history specimens and art. Among her recent pieces are Swarms/Throngs (2018) and The Zoomorphic Eye (2017). Notable exhibitions include Audience Response System at Parkour, Lisbon (2014) and Social Forms Pavilion at Pavilhão Branco, Lisbon (January 2019). This profile was written by curator Laura Barlow for ArtReview's January-February 2019 issue.
