Mariana Castillo Deball’s Parergon at Hamburger Bahnhof

exhibition · 2026-04-24

Mariana Castillo Deball has launched the new iteration of the Preis der Nationalgalerie für junge Kunst, an award she has won. Rather than receiving 50,000 euros, she has been granted a year-long exhibition at a Berlin museum of her choosing, backed by the BMW Foundation. Titled Parergon, the exhibition intertwines history with curatorship, showcasing overlooked items from storage, including artifacts from the technical museum that was housed in Hamburger Bahnhof from the 1930s until the 1980s. Deball examines the destinies of various artworks, such as Arno Breker's death mask of Max Liebermann and two replicas of Kandinsky's paintings labeled as degenerate by the Nazis. The display features a veil printed with the Mschatta Palace facade and provides navigation aids like a mind map and an audio guide.
