Marian Goodman and Robert Mnuchin Collections Head to Auction

This May, Sotheby's and Christie's will auction the private collections of legendary dealers Marian Goodman and Robert Mnuchin, who both died recently. Mnuchin's collection at Sotheby's is estimated at over $130 million, including two museum-quality Rothkos. Goodman's collection at Christie's, titled "Breaking Ground: The Private Collection of Marian Goodman," is valued around $65 million and features seven works by Gerhard Richter from 1982 to 2009, led by "Kerze" (1982) estimated at $35–50 million. Goodman, who founded her gallery in 1977 and championed Richter from 1985, also supported artists like Julie Mehretu, Lawrence Weiner, Maurizio Cattelan, and William Kentridge. Mnuchin, a former Goldman Sachs banker turned gallerist, collected Rothko, Willem de Kooning, Franz Kline, Jeff Koons, and David Hammons. The sales follow last year's auctions of collections by Barbara Gladstone and Daniella Luxembourg, which included works by Richard Prince, Sigmar Polke, Lucio Fontana, and Michelangelo Pistoletto.
