Maria Vassileva on Manifesta 4's Curatorial Approach and Bulgarian Art Scene

Maria Vassileva, who was born in Sofia, Bulgaria, in 1961, was a scholarship curator for Manifesta 4 in Frankfurt back in 2002. She earned her degree in art history from the Art Academy in Sofia in 1984 and continued her education at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1998 and the University of Rochester in 1999. As one of the founders of the Institute of Contemporary Art – Sofia, she also serves as the Chief Curator at the Sofia Art Gallery, where she teaches the History of Contemporary Art and has been curating "The 8th of March" since 1998. In March 2003, she presented "Export-Import. Contemporary Art from Bulgaria" at the Sofia Art Gallery, highlighting the collaborative spirit of Manifesta 4 compared to Documenta.
