Maria Monaci Gallenga: Rediscovering a Forgotten Italian Fashion Pioneer
Maria Monaci Gallenga (1880-1944), a fashion designer from Rome, created a patented technique for fabric printing and dressed notable figures like Eleonora Duse. The daughter of philologist Ernesto Monaci, she wed oncologist Pietro Gallenga in 1903. Her career commenced in 1913 with hand-painted tapestries, leading to her success at the Mostra della moda femminile and the Panama-Pacific International Exposition, both in 1915. In 1920, she established the Bottega Italiana in Rome and curated the Esposizione d'arte italiana moderna from 1921 to 1922. After winning the Grand Prix in 1925, she launched the Boutique Italienne in Paris. Following the economic crisis of 1934, she returned to Italy, passing away on June 28, 1944. She was rediscovered in the 1980s by Karl Lagerfeld and Umberto Tirelli.
