Maria Loboda's 'Faux' Transforms Vistamare into a Garden of Deceptions

exhibition · 2026-04-27

Polish artist Maria Loboda (b. 1979, Kraków) presents her first Italian solo exhibition 'Faux' at Vistamare gallery in Milan. The show transforms the gallery into an orangerie-like space that blurs boundaries between nature and artifice. Inspired by the gallery's architecture and Milan's balconied facades, Loboda created three distinct sections evoking geometric gardens. The title 'Faux' refers to craftsmanship imitating nature. Works include brass and petrified wood sculptures resembling gold earrings stuck in logs, and wall paintings of espaliered fruit trees (grapevine, fig, Japanese chestnut) titled after weapons: 'Nuclear Weapon Behind an Espalier', 'Switchblade Behind an Espalier', and 'Battle Axe Behind an Espalier'. Loboda drew inspiration from Etruscan and Celtic jewelry at the British Museum, as well as high-fashion houses like Hermès and Bottega Veneta. The exhibition runs in 2023 at Vistamare, Milan/Pescara.
