Maria Lassnig's suppressed 1970s films restored and released posthumously

publication · 2026-04-20

Nineteen incomplete films by Austrian artist Maria Lassnig, created during her time in New York in the 1970s, have been finalized and released after her passing. The restoration of these 8mm and 16mm pieces, discovered following her death in 2014, was undertaken by filmmakers Mara Mattuschka and Hans Werner Poschauko, who utilized her notes for the final edits. The compilation, named 'Film Works,' is now available on DVD from the Austrian Film Museum, along with a book that includes reflections from Carolee Schneemann, Paul McCarthy, and Ulrike Ottinger. Lassnig, recognized for her introspective self-portraits, created animations such as 'Selfportrait' (1971) and 'Couples' (1972), and her films include the 'Soul Sisters' series (1972–1979) and 'The Princess and the Shepherd. A Fairytale' (1976–78), which critiques gendered fairy-tale narratives.
