Maria Lai's 'Via Crucis' Exhibition Opens in Sardinia's Jerzu

exhibition · 2026-04-27

This summer, the wine town of Jerzu in Sardinia hosts 'Ricucire il dolore – Tessere la speranza' (Sewing Pain – Weaving Hope), an exhibition of works by Maria Lai (1919–2013). The show inaugurates a newly restored space at Cantina Antichi Poderi, entrusted to the Archivio Maria Lai. Curated by Micol Forti, curator of the Modern and Contemporary Art Collection of the Vatican Museums, the exhibition launches the first edition of 'Un filo bianco' festival, organized by the Fondazione e Archivio Maria Lai and the Parish of Ulassai. The festival reflects on the stations of the Via Crucis, starting with 'Unjust Condemnation'. The exhibition features three stations Lai created in 1981 for the church of S. Antioco martire in Ulassai, characterized by white thread on black backgrounds. Later, Lai intervened with thread on photocopies of her own work, creating new stations shown for the first time. Also on display is 'Sindone', a poignant cloth where Christ's face emerges through thread. The show includes unpublished drawings from the 1940s to 1960s, exploring the intersection of the sacred and daily labor. The exhibition runs in Jerzu, Sardinia.
