Maria Credidio's 'AchromatiCO VIDet' at Museo Diocesano e del Codex in Rossano

exhibition · 2026-04-27

At the Museo Diocesano e del Codex in Rossano, Calabria, a new exhibition juxtaposes the minimalist works of local artist Maria Credidio with the 6th-century Codex Purpureus Rossanensis, a UNESCO Memory of the World manuscript. Credidio's monochrome, geometric paintings—deliberately anti-expressive and emotionally cool—contrast with the vividly illuminated Greek uncial manuscript, whose reddish pages feature avant-garde-like miniatures. The show, curated by Cecilia Perri and Michele Abastante and organized by the cultural association Insieme per Camminare, runs until August 10, 2020. It is supported by the Archdiocese of Rossano-Cariati and the Municipality of Corigliano-Rossano. Rather than emphasizing contrast, the exhibition argues for a continuity between past and future, suggesting that beauty links across eras. The Codex, discovered and preserved in Rossano, was inscribed in UNESCO's Memory of the World Register in October 2015.
