María Carbonell’s ‘The Subversive Stitch’ Links Suffragettes to Contemporary Feminism at CCCC

In Valencia, the Centre del Carme Cultura Contemporània (CCCC) is showcasing ‘The Subversive Stitch,’ an exhibition by María Carbonell that connects the textile activism of British suffragettes to modern feminist movements. This project emerged from her residency at Centro Cultural Las Cigarreras in Alicante, where she studied banners from London marches between 1907 and 1913. The gallery displays ten banners that link the historical suffragette struggle to today's activism, drawing inspiration from Rozsika Parker’s 1984 publication. Curators Isabel Tejeda and María Soledad González-Reforma emphasize textiles' influence on femininity. The exhibition also includes a tapestry of women artists, original feminist colors, and a visual map connecting suffragettes to contemporary groups like Femen and Pussy Riot. It will be open until June 18, 2026, in Sala 2.
