María Blanchard Exhibition at Badajoz Museum Reclaims Forgotten Cubist Pioneer

exhibition · 2026-04-21

The Museo de Bellas Artes de Badajoz (MUBA) presents 'María Blanchard. Pintar el mundo desde dentro,' an exhibition reclaiming the legacy of Spanish painter María Blanchard (Santander, 1881 – París, 1932). Curated by María Toral, the show features 13 works by Blanchard alongside 4 pieces by contemporaries Juan Gris, Diego Rivera, and Jacques Lipchitz, contextualizing her role within Cubism. Blanchard participated in Paris's Salon des Indépendants for three consecutive years and shared gallery space with Pablo Picasso and Juan Gris during World War I. Despite recognition from peers like Marc Chagall, Amedeo Modigliani, Picasso, and André Lhote, historical context obscured her contributions. Lhote's obituary in L'Intransigeant described her as 'one of the most beautiful intelligences of our time.' The exhibition highlights her evolution from Cubist works like Monograma to figurative pieces such as L'Ivrogne (1923) and Maternidad (1925), emphasizing themes of children and motherhood. Blanchard lived and worked with Diego Rivera in Madrid, though their relationship was purely platonic. Friendships with Juan Gris and Jacques Lipchitz profoundly influenced her artistic development. MUBA director María Teresa Rodríguez Prieto notes the show honors pioneering women artists. The exhibition runs until June 14, 2026.
