institutional · 2026-05-01

Maria Balshaw has been appointed as the new director of Tate, becoming the first woman to hold this position. Her nomination comes with support from Prime Minister Theresa May. Balshaw is recognized for her contributions to the cultural landscape of Manchester, particularly her leadership in the £15 million renovation of the Whitworth, awarded the Art Fund Museum of the Year in 2015. Prior to her new role, she was the cultural chief for Manchester City Council, where she secured substantial funding for The Factory, a £110 million arts center set to host the city's biennial festival.
