Mari Katayama Wins First Mori Art Award with JPY 10 Million Prize and Solo Exhibition

Mari Katayama has been awarded the first-ever Mori Art Award, which includes a prize of JPY 10 million (USD 64,000) and a solo exhibition curated by the Mori Contemporary Art Foundation alongside the Mori Art Museum. This biennial accolade, founded in 2025 by Yoshiko Mori, aims to support midcareer artists in Japan. On February 25, an international jury chose Katayama from a pool of four finalists, which included Meiro Koizumi, 目[mé], and Chikako Yamashiro, each of whom received JPY one million. Katayama's art, showcasing her body as mannequins and soft sculptures, is part of collections at Tate Modern and the Mori Art Museum. She also participated in the 58th Venice Biennale in 2019 and has won the Higashikawa Award and Kimura Ihei Award in 2019 and 2020, respectively.
