MARGS Unveils Sartori Collection with 250 Contemporary Works in Porto Alegre

exhibition · 2026-04-19

The Museu de Arte do Rio Grande do Sul (MARGS) in Porto Alegre presents the Coleção Sartori, a major private collection making its formal public debut. Curated by Paulo Herkenhoff, the exhibition features approximately 250 works by over 100 artists, spanning from 1903 to 2021 with a focus on recent decades. The collection, assembled by Paulo Sartori and Nádia Ravanello Pasa in Antônio Prado, is displayed across the museum's first-floor galleries. Herkenhoff organized the show into thematic 'significant nuclei' rather than chronologically, creating dialogues around themes like indigenous presence, Afro-Brazilian culture, and regional art. A central work by Xadalu Tupã Jekupé, 'Área Indígena,' asserts the museum's location on indigenous land. The exhibition highlights artists including Adriana Varejão, Cildo Meireles, Claudia Andujar, and Tunga, alongside a strong representation of Rio Grande do Sul artists. Francisco Dalcol, MARGS's director-curator, emphasized the public museum's role in presenting such collections to fill gaps in institutional holdings. The Sartori Collection, begun in 2013, has previously been accessible through school visits and a partnership with the Universidade de Caxias do Sul. While there are no current plans for the exhibition to travel, invitations from Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo have been received.
