MarginalCarillon: Sound Installation by Eugenio Tibaldi and Taketo Gohara at Base Milano

exhibition · 2026-04-27

From March 28 to April 3, 2022, during Milan Art Week, Base Milano's Ground Hall hosted MarginalCarillon, a large-scale sound installation by artist Eugenio Tibaldi (Alba, 1977) and sound designer Taketo Gohara (Milan, 1975). The work consists of a three-meter drawing on paper depicting a branch, birds, and other natural and artificial elements, wrapped around a rotating mechanism that includes a gramophone, turntable, fishing reel, and a scooter gear. When viewers approach, a camera detects movement and transforms the ink on the paper into musical notes, triggering a choral melody composed by Gohara using harpsichord, piano, percussion, bells, and vibraphone, based on a heartbeat. The installation is presented by Collezione Ramo, a Milanese collection dedicated to drawings and works on paper, and curated by Irina Zucca Alessandrelli. The curatorial concept responds to a need for solace, hope, and lightness in the current historical period, combining visual and sonic elements. Tibaldi describes the work as a refuge for self-discovery, using marginality as a theme—time spent in solitary activities as both defense and freedom. The piece is intended as an adult carousel, offering an escape from reality.
