Margherita Sarfatti: Dual Exhibition in Milan and Rovereto
Two simultaneous exhibitions explore the complex legacy of Margherita Sarfatti (Venice, 1880 – Cavallasca, 1961), a key figure in 20th-century Italian art and politics. At Milan's Museo del Novecento, the show "Margherita Sarfatti. Segni, colori e luci a Milano" unfolds across eleven sections, mixing artworks, clothing, correspondence, invitations, and articles. It traces her role in building Milan's art system in the 1910s–1920s, founding the Novecento and Novecento Italiano movements, and influencing public taste and acquisitions. Only at the end does it address her relationship with Mussolini, her journalism, and her 1938 flight after racial laws. Ninety works by Boccioni, Carrà, Casorati, de Chirico, Funi, and Sironi are on view. Concurrently, the Mart in Rovereto—home to the Fondo Margherita Sarfatti—presents a focused selection tracing the international travels of Novecento works between 1926 and 1932 across France, Argentina, Germany, Hungary, Scandinavia, and Uruguay. The Rovereto exhibition also delves into her origins, education, family, and self-portraits of associated artists, culminating in the shift from the celebratory Dux (1926) to the disillusioned Acqua passata (1955).
