Margaret Whyte to Represent Uruguay at 61st Venice Biennale
Uruguay will be represented by Margaret Whyte at the 61st Venice Biennale, scheduled from 9 May to 22 November 2026, with her pavilion situated in the Giardini. Her exhibition is inspired by Nassim N. Taleb's notion of antifragility, as discussed in his 2012 book Antifragile. Curated by Patricia Bentancur, this work builds upon Whyte's earlier exhibition, Tiempo de Escuchar, held at the National Museum of Visual Arts in Uruguay. Emphasizing chaos, uncertainty, and mistakes, Whyte describes her artistic practice as organic and material. She aligns her work with the Biennale's theme, In Minor Keys, curated by Koyo Kouoh, which focuses on silence, empathy, and healing. Whyte appreciates Uruguayan artists Rafael Barradas, Petrona Viera, Lacy Duarte, and Wifredo Díaz Valdéz, while also acknowledging Uruguay's robust democracy and social welfare, despite its lack of media attention. The Biennale is in collaboration with Versace.
