Margaret Salmon's 'Boy (winter)' Explores Cinematic Gaze Through Youth Portraiture

In her 2022 film 'Boy (winter),' Margaret Salmon delves into the dynamics of the parent-child bond, presenting a 30-minute visual narrative that follows boys from infancy to their teenage years, filmed in Glasgow during the winter of 2021. The film pays homage to childcare efforts by acknowledging a local primary school. Utilizing an observational technique, Salmon captures intimate moments, such as a baby breastfeeding and a soon-to-be father engrossed in video games. She interacts with both cis and trans boys about their passions while keeping the camera in view, thus shifting the perspective. Influenced by Stephen Dwoskin and resonating with Laura Mulvey's male gaze theory, the film will be available online via Art Lovers Movie Club from April 1-30, 2025. Born in 1975, Salmon teaches at The Glasgow School of Art and has participated in prominent art exhibitions.
