Marea Art Project Launches Artist Residency on Amalfi Coast
A new international artist residency program, Marea Art Project, has concluded its first edition on the Amalfi Coast. Conceived by cultural manager Roberto Pontecorvo and art historian Imma Tralli, the initiative aims to reactivate the historical attraction of intellectuals and artists—from Boccaccio to Virginia Woolf, Maurits Escher, and Roberto Rossellini—to the region. The first residency took place at Casa L'Orto in Praiano, the 18th-century home of Carol LeWitt, widow of American conceptual artist Sol LeWitt (1928–2007). The house features two large wall drawings by Sol LeWitt and a terraced organic garden. Participants included writer and visual artist Giulia Crispiani and independent curator and researcher Michele Bertolino. The program is open to professionals in visual arts, dance, music, film, literature, theater, anthropology, philosophy, architecture, design, fashion, and science. Participation is by invitation but accepts self-applications for projects with a significant connection to the territory. The project is in dialogue with Stefano Collicelli Cagol, new director of Centro Pecci in Prato. Future plans include creating a network of residencies along the 45 km coast to establish the area as a contemporary experimentation laboratory overlooking the Mediterranean.
