Marcus Yam Returns to Field After Harvard Fellowship, Publishes Taiwan Report

Marcus Yam, a Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer, has made a comeback after a work-related injury. He has completed a Nieman Fellowship at Harvard and is now serving as an International Visual Correspondent for The Globe and Mail, stationed in Madrid. His inaugural feature, published on July 25, focuses on Taiwanese citizens preparing to counter a possible Chinese invasion. Over a span of two weeks, Yam captured the essence of emergency response and community efforts in Taiwan. Joining The Globe and Mail in March 2026, he undertakes a multifaceted role involving reporting, writing, and photography. Originally from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, he holds an aerospace engineering degree from the University at Buffalo (2006) and studied photojournalism at Ohio University. Yam has contributed to Pulitzer-winning teams at The Seattle Times (2015) and Los Angeles Times (2016) and received the 2022 Pulitzer for Breaking News Photography for his work on the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan. In 2023, he was honored with the Robert Capa Award for his coverage of Russia's invasion of Ukraine and has won the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Journalism Award twice. His report from Taiwan has attracted attention, being referenced by UPI's Korea Regional Review alongside a New York Times article about Taiwan's maritime resistance.
