Marcos Valle: 11-CD box set compiles Odeon years and lost album

publication · 2026-04-23

A box set titled 'Valle Tudo' compiles Marcos Valle's complete Odeon (now EMI) output across 11 CDs, covering 1963 to 1974. It includes a previously unreleased album, 'The Lost Sessions', rescued from the label's archives by Charles Gavin. This would have been Valle's third album, shelved after his second trip to the US in 1966 following the success of 'Samba de Verão'. The box set also includes the 2010 CD 'Estática' (released as 'Esphere' by Far Out Recordings). Valle, a key figure of bossa nova's second generation, debuted in 1963 with 'Samba Demais' as an orthodox disciple of João Gilberto. His music later absorbed baião, funk, soul, jazz, rock, and tango, akin to tropicalismo but without its manifesto. The interview covers his early influences (Luiz Gonzaga, classical piano, accordion), his partnership with brother Paulo Sergio Valle, his encounters with Tom Jobim and João Donato, the political shift after the 1964 coup, his US sojourns (working with Sarah Vaughan, Chicago, and Leon Ware), and his rediscovery by European DJs in the 1990s.
