Marco Tagliafico's 'Superfici di Marea' at Momart Gallery in Matera

Marco Tagliafico (Alessandria, 1985) presents 'Superfici di Marea' at Momart Gallery in Matera, curated by Matteo Galbiati and produced in collaboration with Associazione Culturale Arteam. The exhibition stems from Tagliafico's residency at I Tre Portali after winning the Arteam Cup 2023. The artist uses documentary photography, combining techniques like cyanotype and silver salt printing with pictorial interventions on canvas, glass, and steel. Works such as 'Memoria di un’isola' evoke the ancient sea that once covered Matera's Murgia rocks. The series 'Equoreo' features fossils photographed and then partially obscured by thick paint, while 'Meriggio' uses sliding colored glass plates to reveal the Murgia's millennial landscape. Blue is Tagliafico's signature color, contrasted with ochre tones referencing the Lucanian earth. The artist reflects on dilated time and the connection between ancient and contemporary. Gallery director Monica Palumbo notes the challenges of promoting contemporary art in southern Italy, where local audiences may be more accustomed to artisanal work, but emphasizes the importance of supporting local artists and professionals.
