Marco Strappato's Nearly Monochrome Show at The Gallery Apart
Marco Strappato's exhibition at The Gallery Apart in Rome is almost entirely monochrome, dominated by white. The minimalist atmosphere is punctuated by light sketches on the pristine gallery walls. Recurring themes include landscape as both existential backdrop and sign combination. A video on the floor shows the snow-covered Adriatic coast split in two; a photograph depicts a surreal horizon with two suns; two marble spheres on the ground symbolize the world split between interior and exterior, universal and particular. On another wall, Strappato presents his first self-portrait, a small painting reduced to a silhouette. Downstairs, four large wooden panels mechanically reproduce famous photographs by Luigi Ghirri, reduced to essential lines. Around them, biomorphic sculptures transform driftwood into small monuments.
