Marco Nizzoli and Giovanna Furio's 'La strada della vita' Depicts Siege of Leningrad Through Child's Eyes

publication · 2026-05-04

Marco Nizzoli and Giovanna Furio have released the graphic novel 'La strada della vita', published in Italy by Oblomov Edizioni. Originally published in France by Glénat, the book is set in Leningrad during the Nazi siege of 1941. The story follows eight-year-old violinist Olen'ka, who loses her family and takes refuge in her bombed-out apartment, finding solace in her violin. Nizzoli's pencil and watercolor illustrations blend with Furio's script, which incorporates surrealist and fantastical elements to soften the historical narrative. Furio, making her comics writing debut, collaborated with Nizzoli after meeting in Saint Petersburg. The 72-page color hardcover is priced at €20.
