Marco Fusinato to Represent Australia at 2021 Venice Biennale

exhibition · 2026-05-04

Australia has announced that multidisciplinary artist Marco Fusinato will represent the nation at the 2021 Venice Biennale. Born in Melbourne in 1964, Fusinato works across music, installation, photography, and performance, using sound to create new forms of perception and exploring opposing forces such as high and low culture, noise and silence, minimalism and maximalism. He has collaborated with musicians including Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth and Bruce Russell of The Dead C's. In 2013, he participated in Soundings, the first sound art exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York. He was also included in the main exhibition of the 2015 Venice Biennale, All the World's Futures, curated by Okwui Enwezor, as well as the 2012 São Paulo Biennial and the 2018 Sydney Biennale. The Australian Pavilion will be curated by Alexie Glass-Kantor, executive director of Artspace in Sydney and curator of the Encounters section at Art Basel Hong Kong. Adrian Collette, CEO of the Australia Council, stated that Fusinato's project will reflect the richness of Australian creativity and that representing Australia at the Venice Biennale offers one of the most significant international opportunities for contemporary Australian visual artists. The announcement was made well in advance, as the 58th Venice Biennale was still concluding in 2019. New Zealand had previously revealed that Yuki Kihara would represent the country.
