Marco Fedele di Catrano's work on Gotthard tunnel history in Swiss group show

exhibition · 2026-05-05

The artist Marco Fedele di Catrano, a Roman long resident in Switzerland, contributes to the group exhibition 'Dall'altra parte' (curated by Barbara Zürcher) at three venues: Haus für Kunst Uri in Altdorf, Kunstdepot in Göschenen, and Fondazione Sasso San Gottardo on the Gotthard Pass, running until August 28. His work 'J.H.A.E.V.G.' engages with the history of the Gotthard railway, specifically the statue of liberal statesman Alfred Escher by Richard Kissling. Escher, initiator of the first Gotthard railway project, founder of Credit Suisse, ETH Zurich, and early Swiss insurance companies, was ostracized after the 1880 tunnel celebrations. Kissling's statue of Escher, erected eight years after his death at Zurich's station square, now exists only as a bust—the rest allegedly thrown into Lake Zurich after the artist's death. Fedele di Catrano found the bust in a city depot, supported by a concrete base. He reproduced that base in the Haus für Kunst Uri and positioned the original bust in the same relationship to the ceiling, thematizing Swiss identity in the context of the new Alptransit high-speed rail tunnel (57 km, opening December 11, linking Erstfeld and Bodio). The exhibition addresses home, migration, mobility, and landscape representation.
