Marco Bagnoli completes ritual at San Miniato al Monte Abbey for its millennium

other · 2026-05-04

On April 22, 2019, artist Marco Bagnoli (born 1949 in Florence) will conclude a ritual at the Abbey of San Miniato al Monte in Florence, marking the culmination of the abbey's millennium celebrations. The event, which begins at 7 PM, involves a Gregorian chant by the monks and Bagnoli, together with Abbot Bernardo, carrying fire out of the abbey, mirroring the fire he brought in at the start. This ritual completes a series of works Bagnoli has installed at the abbey since 1992, representing the four elements: Ascolta il flauto di canna (Earth), Fonte Battesimale (Water), La Voce (Fire), and Sonovasoro (Air). The first work was Janua Coeli (1988-1992), a temporary installation of two mirrored metal parabolas at the convent entrance. A publication titled Marco Bagnoli, Janua Coeli, edited by Pier Luigi Tazzi, will be released by Petra, Florence, 2019. The abbey is located at Via delle Porte Sante, 34, 50125 Florence.
