Marcia Hafif's Legacy: From California to Rome to New York, A Painter's Six-Decade Journey

Marcia Jean Woods, known as Marcia Hafif, was born on August 15, 1929, in Pomona, California, and passed away on April 17, 2018, in Laguna Beach at the age of 88. She graduated from Pomona College in 1951 and began her artistic journey with an internship at Ferus Gallery. In 1961, she relocated to Rome, marking the start of her 60-year career. After returning to California in 1969, she obtained an MFA from UC Irvine in 1971 and eventually moved to New York. Her notable works included "The Inventory" and the "Extended Gray Scale" (1972-73), along with significant essays such as "Beginning Again" (1978). She exhibited with Sonnabend Gallery from 1974 to 1981 and gained renewed recognition through exhibitions from 2015 to 2017. She is survived by her son, Peter Nitoglia, and spent her later years between New York and Laguna Beach.
