March 2019 Art Exhibitions: Sharjah Biennial 14, Allen Ruppersberg Retrospective, Nil Yalter Recognition

The 14th Sharjah Biennial, titled 'Leaving the Echo Chamber', runs from 7 March to 10 June 2019, curated by Zoe Butt, Omar Kholeif, and Claire Tancons. It features artists including Khadim Ali, Nalini Malani, Lee Mingwei, Stan Douglas, Ian Cheng, Candice Breitz, Laura Lima, Jace Clayton, and Tracey Rose, exploring themes of technology, diaspora, and global perspectives. Allen Ruppersberg's retrospective 'Intellectual Property: 1968–2018' continues at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles until 12 May, showcasing works like 'Location Piece' (1969), 'Where's Al?' (1972), 'Al's Grand Hotel' (1971), and 'The Novel That Writes Itself' (1978–2014). Brian Calvin exhibits paintings of twins at Almine Rech in Paris from 9 March to 13 April, known for his cartoon-bright portraits. Nil Yalter's first major retrospective 'Exile Is A Hard Job' opens at the Ludwig Museum in Cologne on 9 March until 2 June, featuring works such as 'The Headless Woman or the Belly Dance' (1974) and 'Temporary Dwellings' (1974–77). Diane Arbus's early work exhibition 'In the Beginning' is on view at the Hayward Gallery in London through 6 May, highlighting her first seven years of photography.
