Marcelo Brodsky Retrospective at Museu Judaico de São Paulo Explores Exile and Memory

exhibition · 2026-04-23

Argentinian photographer and human rights activist Marcelo Brodsky presents a career retrospective, 'Marcelo Brodsky: Exílios, Escombros, Resistências,' at the Museu Judaico de São Paulo (MUJ). Curated by critic Márcio Seligmann-Silva, the exhibition features 130 images addressing Latin American dictatorships, the 1994 AMIA terrorist attack in Buenos Aires, and the refugee crisis in the Mediterranean. Brodsky, born in Buenos Aires in 1954 to Russian Jewish emigrants, began photographing in the 1980s while exiled in Barcelona due to Argentina's military dictatorship. His work, described by the curator as a 'critical collection of images,' intervenes in archival photographs through writing and drawing. The show is organized around three thematic axes: Exiles, focusing on migration; Rubble, concerning the AMIA bombing; and Resistance, covering injustices during dictatorships and issues of gender and race. It includes a reworked photograph of assassinated councilwoman Marielle Franco, styled after Andy Warhol's 'Death and Disasters' series. The exhibition runs until November 5, 2024.
