Marcello Mascherini: The Sculptor Who Adorned Italian Ocean Liners
Marcello Mascherini (1906-1983) was an Italian sculptor known for works aboard transatlantic liners like Conte Biancamano, Leonardo da Vinci, and Raffaello, thanks to connections with Gio Ponti, Gustavo Pulitzer Finali, and Libero Andreotti. Born in Udine, he moved to Trieste, studied at Istituto Industriale Alessandro Volta under Alfonso Canciani, and was noted by critic Silvio Benco in 1924. His career took off in the late 1920s: in 1928 he created plaster masks for Teatro Rossetti in Trieste (architect Umberto Nordio). Invited to the first Quadriennale in 1931, he was influenced by Medardo Rosso, Arturo Martini, and Etruscan art. In 1937 he executed two monumental sculptures for Palazzo della Civiltà del Lavoro at EUR: Archeologia and Genio del Teatro. He had a solo room at the Venice Biennale in 1938, winning the Accademia d'Italia prize for sculpture from Mussolini in 1940. Another solo room at the Biennale in 1943 preceded his 1950 Primo Premio for an Italian sculptor (ex-aequo with Luciano Minguzzi). After a 1953 trip to Paris, he studied Brâncuși and Chartres Cathedral, leading to Cubist-influenced stylized forms in the 1950s. His work was included in the 1949 MoMA exhibition "Twentieth-Century Italian Art." His legacy is preserved by the Archivio Marcello Mascherini.
