Marcel Duchamp biography in comic form due July 2020 from Centauria
Italian publisher Centauria will release "Marcel Duchamp. Una vita ready-made" on July 2, 2020, a graphic biography of the French artist. Written by Sergio Rossi and illustrated by Emanuele Racca, the 112-page book traces Duchamp's life from his early painting to his friendship with Man Ray, his passion for chess, and his decade-long artistic silence. The title references his readymade concept, including the famous 1917 urinal. Rossi based the script on Duchamp's interviews and writings, with most dialogue drawn from the artist's own words. Racca adopted a minimalist style to avoid visual clutter, believing Duchamp's story needed no embellishment. The book is part of Centauria's series of artist biographies, following volumes on Yayoi Kusama, Francis Bacon, and Edward Hopper. Rossi was initially unfamiliar with Duchamp beyond high school lessons and the film "Entr'acte," and discovered details like his friendship with writer Henry-Pierre Roché. Racca noted the challenge of tackling such a monumental figure and credited Rossi's script for guidance. The book costs €19.90 and is available through Centauria's website.
