Marcel Breuer's Bauhaus Legacy Explored at Villa Noailles

exhibition · 2026-04-24

The exhibition titled "Marcel Breuer, Sun and Shadow" is currently on display at Villa Noailles in Hyères, curated by Alexandre Mare and Stéphane Boudin-Lestienne. It highlights Breuer's furniture alongside some of his lesser-known architectural works. Although Breuer never set foot in the villa, his designs were integral to the de Noailles family’s lifestyle. David des Moutis has scenographed the exhibition, which includes Breuer's tubular steel chairs in the "salon rose," alongside pieces by Charlotte Perriand and Pierre Charreau. The "chambre Ravesteyn" features a chair designed for Wassily Kandinsky’s dining room, paired with his 1927 artwork. Additionally, the "salon de lecture" showcases the 1951 New Canaan desk and a model from Bauhaus masters. Breuer's architectural endeavors, such as the Flaine ski resort and the UNESCO headquarters, are documented in the exhibition. The basement area displays works by Design Parade winners and a painting by Sigurdur Arni Sigurdsson from the Fondation Carmignac.
