artist · 2026-04-20

Marc Camille Chaimowicz, a Paris-born, London-based artist known for blending art, décor, and design, has died at age 77, as confirmed by his gallery Cabinet. His work featured room-scale installations that merged private life with public art through wallpapers, textiles, sculpture, furniture, ceramics, and collages, often of his own creation, exploring themes of place, memory, and home. In 2011, ArtReview placed him on its cover, with writer Neal Brown recalling Chaimowicz's 'world' from first encountering him as a student at Hornsey College of Art in London in 1976, describing him as a 'wandering presence' who was 'unfailingly courteous and affirming' and whose art conveyed 'tender love and affection'. Critic Gaby Wood noted in 2018 that his influence was 'hard to pinpoint, but... substantial'. Chaimowicz's practice challenged conventional boundaries, making his death a significant loss in contemporary art.
