MAP Bengaluru Opens with Exhibition on Women in Indian Art

exhibition · 2026-04-24

In February 2023, the Museum of Art & Photography (MAP) located in Bengaluru, India, inaugurated its exhibitions, one of which is 'Visible/Invisible: Representation of Women in Art through the MAP Collection,' curated by Kamini Sawhney. This exhibition showcases more than 130 pieces from a collection exceeding 60,000 items, largely contributed by the Poddar family, established by Abhishek Poddar. Featured artists include K.G. Subramanyan, Chitra Ganesh, and M.F. Husain. The exhibition is organized into four sections and employs diverse media for greater inclusivity. Sawhney's essay in the catalogue discusses the representation of women in art, spotlighting works such as Jamini Roy's depiction of Krishna and Yashoda, alongside photographs of Indira Gandhi. The exhibition investigates the contrast between women’s visibility in art and their absence in public domains.
