Manzoni Online: Digital Portal Aggregates Alessandro Manzoni's Complete Works

digital · 2026-04-27

A new digital platform called Manzoni Online has launched to collect and catalog the complete literary output of Alessandro Manzoni (Milan, 1785–1873), the author of "I Promessi Sposi." The portal is a collaborative effort involving scholars from the Universities of Parma, Milan, Pavia, Lausanne, Bologna, and Rome, with contributions from the Biblioteca Nazionale Braidense (BNB) and the Centro Nazionale di Studi Manzoniani (CNSM) in Milan. The site is a work in progress, continuously updated as new materials are digitized and cataloged. Its goal is to recover the entire bibliography and historical criticism of Manzoni's work, targeting researchers and interested readers. Users can search for documents by sender, recipient, cited work, holding institution, or title. Literary works are divided into sections such as poems, tragedies, moral and philosophical works, historical and political essays, literary writings, and unpublished linguistic texts. The project is funded by the Italian Ministry of Research and the Ministry of Cultural Heritage. Organizers state that the platform provides rigorous scientific cataloging and digitally preserves the paper heritage of Italian libraries, replacing incomplete and outdated research tools.
