Mantegna and Bellini's 'Presentation at the Temple' Compared in Venice

exhibition · 2026-05-04

In 2019, the Fondazione Querini Stampalia in Venice, established in 1868 by Count Giovanni Querini Stampalia, will mark its 150th anniversary. The exhibition titled 'Capolavori a confronto Bellini/Mantegna. Presentazione di Gesù al Tempio,' curated by Brigit Blass-Simmen, Neville Rowley, and Giovanni Carlo Federico Villa, showcases Andrea Mantegna's 'Presentation at the Temple' (1454) alongside Giovanni Bellini's interpretation (1470-1480). Mantegna, who was married to Jacopo Bellini's daughter, emphasizes the importance of drawing, while Bellini is known for his vibrant use of color. Following its Venice showing, the exhibition will move to the National Gallery in London on October 1, 2018, and then to the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin starting March 1, 2019. Additionally, in autumn 2018, selected masterpieces from the Cassa di Risparmio di Venezia will be exhibited in newly designed spaces.
