Manon's Feminist Body Theater at Centre Culturel Suisse
The Centre Culturel Suisse in Paris presents 'MANON,' a retrospective of Swiss artist Manon, who at 80 is a pioneer of feminist performance art. The exhibition, running until July 18, 2021, features her installations, performances, and photographic series from the 1970s to the present. Manon's work explores female identity, sexuality, and the body through theatrical self-portraiture, including her scandalous 1974 installation 'Boudoir rose saumon,' a satin-lined bedroom where she received visitors. Her series 'Elektrokardiogramm' (1979) and 'La Dame au crâne rasé' (1977-78) confront gender norms and societal constraints. The show culminates in a stark hospital bed under neon lights, juxtaposed with psychedelic photographs of her younger self. Curated by Julie Chaizemartin, the exhibition positions Manon within contemporary gender debates and the rediscovery of women artists.
