MANN Naples Secures €11M for New Spaces, Aims for Museum-2 at Real Albergo dei Poveri

institutional · 2026-04-27

The National Archaeological Museum of Naples (MANN) continues its transformation under director Paolo Giulierini, with over €11 million in new funding for renovation and expansion. The museum, recently promoted to first-tier status with support from Minister Gennaro Sangiuliano, has already surpassed 400,000 visitors in 2023. New interventions focus on Level -1, creating a temporary exhibition space under the Atrium accessible via a new staircase and elevator linked to the Ancient Mediterranean section, which will also become an alternative entrance connected to the metro. The Cavaiole deposits will be upgraded for public visits by appointment, and new restrooms will be built. The Cavaiole garden will become a public square by removing the gate. Within three years, a restaurant and guesthouse with four apartments will be created in a state-owned building on Via Santa Teresa degli Scalzi. By year-end, the Cuma and Neapolis sections will open, and the Gems and Numismatics section reinstallation concludes in October, featuring the Farnese Cup. The Alexander Mosaic is set for an ambitious restoration involving flipping to check mortar conditions. A new project, "Il tesoro della Legalità," plans a detached museum (MANN-2) at the Real Albergo dei Poveri, in collaboration with the Naples Prosecutor's Office, Carabinieri, and Federico II University, to display over 10,000 recovered artifacts seized from illegal trafficking since the 1960s.
