Manifesta's Zurich Edition Features Site-Specific Works in Unusual Locations

exhibition · 2026-04-20

Running until September 18, 2016, Manifesta, the European Biennial of Contemporary Art, is taking place in Zurich. Curator Christian Jankowski's vision emphasizes collaboration between artists and professionals in their work environments. At dentist Danielle Heller Fontana's office, Torbjørn Rødland has showcased photographs. Frank Erhard Walther designed orange half-aprons for the staff at the Park Hyatt Hotel. Mike Bouchet created a sculpture from concrete and excrement at a sewage treatment facility. The exhibition features pieces at central locations as well as scattered 'manifestations' across the city. The author draws a parallel to Jan Hoet's 1986 Chambres d'Amis exhibition in Ghent, which included 51 artists, such as Joseph Kosuth at psychoanalyst Andre Vereecken's residence. Hoet later collaborated with Marina Abramovic in The Urgent Dance. This article was exclusively published online by ArtReview on July 21, 2016.
