Manifesta 11 Zurich Announces 29 New Productions and 100 Artists for Historical Exhibition
Manifesta 11, the itinerant biennial, opens in Zurich on June 11, 2016, with the theme "What People Do for Money: Some Joint Ventures." Christian Jankowski serves as chief curator alongside Francesca Gavin. Twenty-nine site-specific works will pair artists with professionals: Carles Congost works with local firefighters on a film; Teresa Margolles with a transgender person; Marguerite Humeau with a robotic engineer; Shelly Nadashi with a literature teacher; Maurizio Cattelan with a Paralympic athlete; Michel Houellebecq with a Swiss doctor for a health analysis. Other pairings include Evgeny Antufiev with a priest, John Arnold with a Michelin-starred chef, and Mike Bouchet with a wastewater treatment director. The works will be shown in a satellite venue, a contemporary art institution, and the Pavilion of Reflections—a floating island with an open-air cinema and pool. The historical exhibition "Sites Under Construction" features nearly 100 artists, including Armin Linke, Bruno Munari, Fatima Al Qadiri & Khalid Al Gharaballi, Sophie Calle, Thomas Demand, Kim Gordon, Andreas Gursky, Pierre Huyghe, and Rosemarie Trockel. Italian participation is minimal.
