Manifesta 11 Opens in Zurich with Focus on Labor and Provocative Works
Manifesta 11, curated by Christian Jankowski, has opened in Zurich across four main venues, with the Löwenbräukunst complex serving as a major hub. The exhibition, centered on the theme of work, features contributions from notable artists including Maurizio Cattelan, who presents a photograph and a performance on the lake involving an athlete in a wheelchair moving across the water surface. Self-taught painter Angela Vanini, aged 52 and living in Germany for 35 years, makes her debut. Mike Bouchet's installation "The Zurich Load" consists of 80,000 kilograms of human feces, the daily output of Zurich's residents, displayed in a sealed room with deodorants provided at the exit. At the Helmhaus, the second main venue, the theme of work takes on a more playful tone, with Ceal Floyer's "Romance" exploring lost in translation. Michel Houellebecq appears as a visual artist with works detailing his health status. Satellite works by Evgeny Antufiev and Santiago Sierra are also on view.
