Manifesta 10 Confronts Russian Politics at St. Petersburg's Hermitage Museum

festival-fair · 2026-04-22

From June 28 to October 31, 2014, the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg hosted Manifesta 10, marking the biennial's inaugural event in Russia and aligning with the museum's 250th anniversary. Curator Kasper König voiced concerns regarding Russia's oppressive climate, particularly in relation to anti-LGBT legislation and the situation in Crimea. Artists such as Boris Mikhailov and Alexandra Sukhareva engaged with local societal issues, while international contributors examined Russian narratives. Among the standout pieces were Olivier Mosset's monochrome paintings, Bruce Nauman's "Mapping the Studio," and Louise Bourgeois's "The Institute." Mikhail Piotrovsky, the museum's director, highlighted the creative linkages between contemporary and classical art, although high visa fees restricted foreign attendance.
