MAN Nuoro Reopens Museo Ciusa with Expanded Spaces

On August 4, 2016, the Museo Ciusa in Nuoro, Sardinia, reopened after years of closure, now managed by the MAN (Museo d'Arte della Provincia di Nuoro). The museum is housed in the former courthouse of the Barbagia capital and nearly doubles MAN's exhibition surface, located within walking distance. The reopening follows an inter-institutional agreement among the Regione Sardegna, the Comune di Nuoro, and the Provincia di Nuoro, with governance of MAN transitioning to a foundation. The spaces, recently restored, include galleries for Francesco Ciusa's sculptures and plasters, a bookshop, and additional rooms. Director Lorenzo Giusti stated the museum will focus on recontextualizing local art within a global framework, avoiding purely regional narratives. The inaugural exhibition, "Sardegna 900," features 20th-century Sardinian painting from the collection, concluding with a tribute to Pinuccio Sciola, the island's renowned sculptor who died three months prior. Meanwhile, MAN's main venue on Via Satta hosts summer shows: Petra Feriancová's project room exploring parallels between Sardinian and Slovakian ancestral cultures, and Garry Winogrand's "Women are Beautiful"—the first Italian presentation of original photos from that series.
